Taiwan Helps Haiti

February 10, 2010

Taiwan Rescue Workers in Haiti

This post is a little late, but definitely worth noting!

Taiwan’s government has already pledged $5 million in aid as well as committed almost 100 tons of humanitarian relief supplies. More importantly, urged on by aid experts and figures such as France’s Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, Taiwanese officials are mulling over the possibility of helping cancel Haiti’s publicexternal debt, which was measured in 2008 at around $1.8 billion in total.

ITASA in the Press!

January 21, 2010

We met up with several news reporters this past weekend in Los Angeles at 888 Seafood. We were lucky enough to meet Lotus Lin (Taiwan Daily), Leaf Chiang (The Central News Agency), Tina Chuang (Chinese L.A. Daily News), Elin Chen (Chinese Daily News – World Journal), Melissa Chen (Sin Tao Newspapers), and Douglas Shen (Director, TECO-LA). We would like to especially thank Lotus for putting this all together. The wonderful 姊姊s interviewed us about our upcoming conference and are going to feature us in their newspapers in the next following weeks!

Update: We were featured in Taiwan Daily and Chinese L.A. Daily News this past Wednesday. Spread the word and be on the lookout for other articles in the next few days! In the meantime, check out some pictures from last Saturday as well as newspaper clippings from Taiwan Daily (台灣日報)!

Last Wednesday, January 13, our ITASA team attended UCSD TASA’s winter quarter GBM where we got to make an announcement about the upcoming ITASA conference as well as distribute applications for student hosts, volunteers, and small group leaders! We are lucky that UCSD TASA has been so supportive of the ITASA conference team and we’re excited for many TASA members to also be ITASA volunteers!!

TACL Census 2010 College Contest!

December 22, 2009

We are excited to announce that TACL (Taiwanese American Citizens League) is having a grant contest for college students as part of its campaign to promote the importance of writing in “Taiwanese” for the 2010 Census. While there are an estimated 1.2 million Taiwanese Americans living in the United States, the 2000 Census only recorded 144,795 Taiwanese people. Writing in “Taiwanese” for the 2010 Census will help to promote the fact that our community has grown significantly and our numbers deserve to be accurately counted and represented!

The objectives of the TACL Census 2010 grant contest are to:

  • Increase awareness about Census 2010 and get students to think about its importance to the Taiwanese American community and how it relates to their community and future.
  • Promote community involvement and social service.
  • Recognize students with leadership qualities as well as a commitment to civic and public service.

These are some ideas that college student groups may put on:

  • Taiwanese American Census 2010 education forum in the community, class, dorm, etc.
  • Develop an in-language TV public service announcement or jingle/song for Taiwanese American radio play.
  • Utilizing the arts as medium such as creating a viral video on video sharing websites like YouTube.
  • Tabling at Taiwanese markets, events, etc.
  • In-language posters for Taiwanese businesses or areas with high concentrations of Taiwanese consumers.
  • “Be counted” Taiwanese American Census 2010 promotional items i.e. T-shirt campaign, door hangers in Taiwanese American neighborhoods
  • …and much, much more! The innovation is up to you!

The winners will receive a $500 grant for their student organization or college tuition funding!! More information and the application can be found here:

ITASA promo video filming session

December 6, 2009

Couple weeks ago (I know… this post lagged for a while) the ITASA team finally filmed its first promo video! The video was one of a few videos we’ll put out to help perspective attendants gain some understanding of the UCSD team, the UCSD campus, and the 2010 ITASA event. The whole day was pretty hectic, starting from 10:30 am we started filming non-stop. Person after person, location after location, Andrew, Jonathan and Jessica worked tirelessly to get the best shots of everyone possible. Of course, the day did not go down all in seriousness. During some of the scenes we would ask individuals we’re filming to dance around in open areas where people are present. We would tell them that the dance is crucial in making a good video, but in reality we really just wanted to see how ridiculous they can be. Sorry to all those who were forced to do embarrassing stuff out there that day. I would like you to know that you have entertained us well.

Of course, the content of the video will not be discussed here, but be on the lookout for it this month. If you are thinking about going to the conference but haven’t made up your mind, we hope that by watching this video you will make the “right” decision.
